Time flies. It
has already been three months and it's almost the end of our research
project. After we worked up our homepage, we concluded some findings of
our
team’s research on “No sky" street area. After we listed and screened
the findings, the major findings are as follows.
|
The “truth” of
“no sky” |
Although “No sky" street
area is called “no sky” Street, “no sky”
doesn't necessarily
mean customers received no sun light in the street during
their shopping. So-called “no sky” means that the pavilions
built by the store owners were connected to each other and
almost block the sky. In addition, the measures of skylight
made “No sky" street area not as dark as imagined but a
comfortable environment for shopping that blocked the wind
and rain. |
|
Wisdom of the
ancestors |
The
development of “No sky" street area is not to facilitate
carrying on business. It was an overall commercial community
formed by store owners to create a more
comfortable shopping
environment and construct a more convenient trading place.
It is not inferior when compared with Yuanding Market Street
in Japan. From this point of view, the wisdom of the
ancestors is really brilliant. |

Commercial model |
The buildings of “no sky”
market are from their structures to their roofs were of the
same pattern
agreed by all the residences. All relevant
facades, inner equipment and shared walls were of same
pattern as well so the street appeared to be in uniform.
From this we can see how powerful the commercial
organization in Lukang was and it also evidenced the
prosperity of commercial activities in Lukang was. |

The cause of the
disappearance of “No sky" street area |
Many people thought that
the cause of the disappearance of “No sky" street area is
that Lukang Harbor was silted up and led to the drop of
commercial activities. According to books, however, we found
that the decline of “no sky” is caused because after
Japanese occupation, large amounts of store owners went back
to mainland China. It was not the drop of commercial
functions, as people though, that led to the disappearance
of “no sky”. |

Epitome of the
small town |
“No sky" street area is
the
best evidence of Lukang going from prosperity to
decline. The history of “No sky" street area is a epitome of
Lukang, which started as a small village in west coastline
of Taiwan and became a big commercial harbor that can be
counted on ones fingers but then declined from “second Lu”
to a small town along west coastline again. Knowing the
history of “No sky" street area is like reading a book of
the rise and decline of Lukang. |

Dilemma of street
houses |
The last relics of “No sky"
street area are the street houses on Jhongshan Road.
Unfortunately, during our investigation, the facades
recorded in many books are already gone. We cannot rebuild
relics and the facades will never exist once they’re gone.
Relevant branch should
pay attention to this problem. |
