Project Overview

1. The category we are participating is:
CyberFair Category 3 :"Business and Community Organizations"

2. Introduction of "Our Local Community":

Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, the so-called "Silicon Valley in Taiwan", is located in Kuang-fu Road, Hsinchu City, which houses high-tech industries and attracts numerous high-tech professionals. The Industrial Park provided many work offers driving the prosperity of Hsinchu City and other related industries, but also brought forth negative influences, such as expensive real estates, chaotic traffic and environmental pollutions. Our project goal focuses on introducing the Industrial Park and discussing objectively the interaction between the Industrial Park and Hsinchu City.

3. Project Outline:

Introduction of Industry Development (Enterprises)in Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, and the interaction between the Industrial Park and Hsinchu City (Community). We expected that our project will be a lead-in, which will bring together the community power, in the hope of Enterprises support community, community promotes enterprises. Let us appreciate and take care of our hometown together.

4. Our Internet environment:

Currently our school provides two computer rooms with 39 PCs respectively, including servers and computers for use of administration, the school has a LAN with over 100 computers. The LAN is connected to Taiwan Academic Network through a dedicated line of optic fiber (our school used 10 MB only) provided by the Education Department of the City Goverment. Normally during the lunch break, computer rooms are available for students. Students can use the connection in school, the transmission speed is much faster. After school, students can also use their PC at home, using 56K Modem to connect to the school network for free. The free dial-up line is provided by the Education Department of Hsinchu City Government and the University of Ching Hua.

5. Overcome Difficulties:

* Time:
Common free time is quite limited. In addition to short breaks between classes, lunch break, morning study time, we also met at weekends and holidays. Sometimes we spent several weekends together to discuss and produce our work.
* Material acquisition:
Since there is few information about interaction between enterprises and community, which is the topic we would discuss, we can only acquire our information by way of interviews. For interviewing so many people, we really spent a lot of time and energy for arrangement, making contact, conducting interviews and sorting materials.

6. Afterwords

Network reduced the distance for acquiring information. But the relationship between people is still isolated. The best way to know each other is through "Cyberfair", which can introduce the local communities in a organized method. Thus the people living in this village of Earth will understand that we are on the same boat and should care more about environment issues.

3. Project Elements:
1.Participating in the project research and activity of Cyberfair contributed much to the related contents for teaching and course demand in our school:

Throughout nine-year obligational education, students should learn to know and appreciate land and community where they live. Much information of our project in which we are interested cannot be found in textbooks. Therefore we collected information from school library, Municiple Culture Center, bookstores, and even newspapers, magazins and Internet. Also we conducted interviews with and paid visits to inhabitants around the Industrial Park. We learned how to get along with people, to sort materials, to ask questions and to arrange information. Most important, we formed a highest team spirit through continuous discussion and group working. Besides, now we knew our neighbor - Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park much better, it is no more a place beyond reach. Throught the work we also understood how these technology pioneers have contributed to our country. We are very glad that our work will be posted on the Internet because of CyberFair, so that net pals worldwide could see our work and learn about Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park.

2. The information technology we used to achieve CyberFair Project:

* Using recorder to record the interviews.

* Using PC to compose the webpages and to upload webpages to school servers for testing.

* Using media like traditional camera, digital camera and scanner to obtain image data.

* Using Ulead PhotoImpact 4.0 to produce image.

* Using Ulead GIF Animator to produce transparent image.

* Using Email, telephone, Fax machine and message board to contact and arrange interviews.

* Using frontpage to write document.

  * Using Cute-Ftp to transmit the webpage files to servers.

  * Using browser to check the presentation of web pages.

3.Wealso used the following methods (online or through personal contact) to play the role as an "ambassador" for CyberFair:

First we would like to thank Secretary Lin of Administration. She enthusiastically lent us many data for reference. Also she arranged an interview with Director Huang, whose kindness, ardor and conversational game us a strong impression. Much help is attributed to Director Huang. We also thank Councillor Chang Tsu-yen, who offered many precious opinions and gave us the telephone numbers of heads from neighborhood of Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park. So we could successfully conducted interviews with Head Lin (Hsien-Shui District), Head Chen (Lung-shan District) and Head Cheng (Industrial Park District). The last but not the least, we want to thank Mr. Ho Kau-lu, Journalist of China Times, who provided us many disks with precious data, as he first heard we.will give him an interview.

We also thought of a suitable design, through which our classmates, teachers, relatives and friends can participate in the meaningful activity. Our work will be published on the website of Tung Men Primary School. We believe that in short time the website visitors will all know the Schools CyberFair in Taiwan.

4. This project's influence and impact on us:
* Since we are involved in the project, many citizens began to be curious about us. They never thought that several 12 to 13-year-old school kids would be interested in Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park that with a controversial fame. Many of those interviewed hoped that people will understand the Industrial Park better and correctly by reading the webpages, thus to have possitive thoughts about the park.
* After seeing our webpages, our parents' co-workers gave us much feedback and compliments. Many elders also gave us encourgement. Through introduction on the webpages, they understood the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park much better and knew what communication industry and optoelectronics industry are. We are very happy to know that our efforts can be a contribution to mutual understanding.
* Our parents supported the projects very much. They understood the invaluable importance which computer and Internet mean to learning and education.

5. Help provided by other memebers in community and their participation in the project:

* We owed much thanks to Mr. Ho, Journalist of China Times, for providing us treasurous data and pictures.

6.Disovery, lesson and suprises:

* Whatever we do we should prepare in advance. so we can make perfect planning.
* Internet bring great convenience. We used to retrieve data needed from the Internet, copied and paste, then completed a report. But for this project, we put emphasis on the importance of the first-hand data; we learned how to finish a task seriously. We learned that this is not just a competition, but a chance to develope our learning attitude and methods.
* With much good luck we finished producing the project presentation and webpages. We want to thank many people's ardent help. Besides, we knew the importance of cooperation; this project enhanced the friendship between team members.
* Although we are still very young, we already learned the importance of community. We will care people, business and objects around us. Human should not only develop technology, but also need to care about environmental and cultural issues.
